Your Gateway to Adventure and Relaxation

Nestled in a tiny rural hamlet at the foot of Cross Fell, the highest peak in the North Pennines, Kirkland Cottages offer a peaceful and idyllic retreat. We, Nick and Anna, are delighted to welcome you to our charming self-catering holiday cottages, where stunning natural beauty meets warm, personal hospitality.

A Rich History and Family Legacy

Kirkland, a small hamlet with just two farms, seven houses, and an 11th-century church, has a rich history dating back to 1070. The land was granted to Norman Knight William Le-Flemming by William the Conqueror. While much of the land was sold off over the centuries, our small farm remained in the Le-Flemming family until 1974. After more than 30 years of operation by Ian and Lesley Howes, we took on the business in May 2024. We’re passionate about hospitality, regenerative farming, and community, and we’re proud to continue this family-run tradition.

Your Perfect Base for Exploration

With panoramic views of the Eden Valley and the Lake District Fells, our cottages provide the perfect base to explore some of the UK’s most breathtaking regions. From the rugged landscapes of Cumbria and the Lake District National Park to the picturesque Yorkshire Dales, Northumbria, County Durham, and even the Scottish Borders, you’ll find adventure and tranquillity at your doorstep.

Nature and Adventure Right on Your Doorstep

Our peaceful location offers stunning views of the Lake District Fells from our large gardens. The surrounding pastures are a haven for wildlife, including deer, squirrels, badgers, and a variety of bird species like buzzards and peregrine falcons. From the cottages, a network of footpaths begins, with options ranging from a short stroll to the tranquil fells to a more energetic hike up Cross Fell, the highest peak in the Pennines. For cyclists, both scenic road routes and challenging mountain biking tracks offer the perfect way to explore the Eden Valley and its picturesque villages.

Comfortable and Well-Maintained Cottages

Our four cottages are designed with your comfort in mind, offering cosy, well-furnished spaces that blend charm and practicality. We pride ourselves on maintaining them to the highest standards, ensuring your stay is as relaxing and enjoyable as possible.

A Warm, Family-Run Welcome

As resident owners, we bring our love for the outdoors, the land, and community to everything we do. Whether you’re here for a walking holiday, a peaceful countryside escape, or to explore the region’s rich history, we are here to make your stay truly special.

Discover the beauty of Kirkland and the surrounding wonders of the North Pennines—your countryside adventure begins here. We look forward to welcoming you!
